CROP COOLING FAQs

When grain is harvested, it often retains residual heat and moisture, creating an environment where mould, pests, and harmful microbes can thrive. By cooling the grain, farmers and producers reduce the risk of deterioration, maintaining its nutritional value and weight. Cooling grain to below 15°C within two weeks of harvest reduces insect activity. This should then be reduced to below 12°C within 3–4 months of harvest to stop insect activity. Further cooling to below 5°C by the end of December helps prevent mite proliferation and preserves grain quality.

Polycool pedestals stand vertically within stored grain, using fans to draw heat out efficiently. Their twin-wall plastic construction and ribbed design prevent blockages, ensuring consistent airflow. Unlike traditional metal pedestals, which can be easily damaged and are costly to maintain, they are more durable and provide even cooling, reducing the risk of mould and insect infestations.

Unlike permanent underfloor systems, pedestal ventilation is cost-effective, easy to install and flexible. It allows targeted cooling, reducing energy costs while preserving grain quality. The slotted base design ensures air is drawn across a wider area, improving efficiency and preventing uneven temperature zones within the grain store.

Grain Fan Assist automates fan operation based on temperature differences, ensuring fans run only when needed. This reduces energy consumption by up to 40%, speeds up cooling times and prevents warm air from undoing previous cooling efforts. It’s a smart, wireless solution for optimising grain storage conditions.
Our pedestal ventilation and Grain Fan Assist systems can be integrated into existing grain stores without major infrastructure changes. This makes upgrading affordable and efficient, allowing farmers to improve cooling performance without costly renovations or downtime.
Evans and Pearce offer single-phase and three-phase fans, including Grain Fan Assist Wireless models that automate cooling. These fans vary in power and airflow capacity, ensuring farmers can select the right option based on store size, grain type and cooling requirements.
Differential temperature cooling ensures fans activate only when outside air is cooler than the grain, preventing unnecessary energy use. This method accelerates cooling, maintains grain quality, and avoids drawing warm air into the store, which could lead to spoilage.
Regular checks on fans, pedestals and temperature probes ensure optimal performance. Cleaning ventilation slots, inspecting electrical connections and monitoring grain temperature help maintain efficiency. Evans and Pearce’s durable designs minimise maintenance needs, making their systems reliable and long-lasting.
Factors like store size, grain type and climate influence the ideal setup. Evans and Pearce provide expert guidance to help farmers choose the best combination of pedestals, fans and automation for efficient cooling and long-term grain preservation.

MOBILE SEED PROCESSING FAQs

Mobile seed processing allows you to clean, grade, and treat your harvested seed at the point of storage, saving time and transportation costs. It gives you full traceability, control over seed quality, and significant cost savings when compared to buying certified seed

Our mobile units are designed to handle a range of crops including all cereals,  oilseed rape, peas, beans, and linseed. Each unit is tailored for crop-specific efficiency and cleanliness.

Our machines use a combination of grading screens, air separation, gravity tables and de-awners to remove impurities like weed seeds, small grains, stones and straw. The result is a clean, uniform seed lot ready for drilling.

Yes, we offer a wide range of professional seed treatments including fungicides, insecticides, and trace elements. These are applied precisely using calibrated equipment, ensuring full seed coverage and compliance with regulations.

Processing capacity varies based on crop type and condition, but our units typically have an output of 6-12 tonnes per hour. This allows most jobs to be completed within a day, depending on volume and accessibility.

On-site processing ensures seed quality remains under your control throughout the process. It reduces the risk of cross-contamination, improves logistics, and allows immediate storage or drilling of the treated seed.

Absolutely. Farm-saved seed, when professionally cleaned and treated, is significantly cheaper than purchasing new seed. With proper processing, yields and performance remain comparable while input costs are lowered.

We’ll ask for crop type, estimated tonnage, and access information. Ideally, seed should be dry and stored in a clean area. Our team will advise on best practices before we arrive to ensure smooth and efficient processing.

Yes, we are experienced in working with organic growers. We use dedicated, cleaned-down equipment and follow strict protocols to avoid contamination, ensuring compliance with organic standards.
